The knee joint is one of the most complex joints in the body and one of the most commonly injured. The knee is a hinge joint between your thigh bone and shin bone and is designed to bend and straighten. Inside the knee joint are the meniscus which are rounded cartilage on top of your shin bone designed to distribute load and absorb forces. There are two menisci in each knee which can get irritated or torn particularly if you have twisted your knee.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain – can be sharp or aching pain particularly with movement or twisting
A large tear of the meniscus can cause a ‘flap’ of the cartilage that is still partly attached and can result in locking or catching of the knee.
Meniscus irritations or tears that are left untreated can become long term problems. Pain and swelling that isn’t managed can lead to loss of strength around the knee which can increase your chance of further complications and arthritic changes within the knee.
An individualised stretching and strengthening program will ensure a speedy recovery and avoid any long term complications.
