SPORTS INJURY?? What to Do?
How to Care for Your Sports Injury?.
There is never a great time for an injury. But we do know that most sports injuries occur over the weekend! That’s why at Hoys Physiotherapy we have established the Acute Sports Injury Clinic at a selection of our clinics.
What’s the Benefit?
Your Acute Sports Injury Clinic involves a one to one Consultation where you will be assessed by a physiotherapist and provided with the following information:
– Quick and accurate diagnosis and prognosis from a Physiotherapist. Your
consultation only requires 15 minutes of your time.
– Early acute sports injury care, professional advice and education. What to do this week !
– Fast referral for X-rays, ultrasound or MRI scans to confirm your diagnosis.
– Prompt referral to Sports Physicians, GPs or Surgeons with whom we work with closely if required.
– Immediate supply of walking boots, braces and rental crutches if needed. Waterproof plasters also available.
– Low cost professional service. The acute sports injury consultation fee is only $10.00, if you wish to proceed with our recommendations then a normal treatment consultation fee is charged. In most cases, your private health will cover your full acute sports injury assessment consultation and treatment fee.

PILATES Update –
Matwork classes have a focus on core, hip and neck strengthening combined with stretches and postural correction. They are small group classes that utilise exercise balls and different resistance bands to add variety and complexity. Matwork is a great way to start your core strengthening and the exercises are easily incorporated into your daily routine.

We have recently added a number of Pilates equipment classes. These classes have a maximum of four people and utilise the reformer, trap table and wanda chair. The equipment can be used to target specific muscle groups and the springs are used to add extra resistance and difficulty. Equipment Pilates can be modified so it is appropriate for beginners or people with pain and injures while at the same time can be adjusted for higher level strengthening or athletes returning to running or sport.

Getting going for your winter sports
So, another summer is slowly fading, and we are thinking about whether we will play footy, netball or go on that ski trip this winter.
Have you considered whether the body is up for the challenge? Has the summer put on a few extra kilos? Have you sorted out that dodgy hamstring from last year? Have you done any fitness work since last season?
Injury prevention is now a huge part of most sports with large amounts of money now being spent on ways to decrease the risk of injuries. Programmes like FIFA 11+ for football; Netball KNEE programme; get fit to ski programmes; and PEP programmes to name but a few. All these programmes provide a great first step to injury prevention and keeping you involved in your winter sports.
Hoys Physiotherapy is currently in the process of delivering the FIFA 11+ programme to your local football club in association with North Coast Football. If you would like a more tailored injury prevention programme or some more specific advice about your troublesome back, knee or ankle, give us a call today and let us try and prevent it from keeping you on the sideline this summer.
What’s new in the pool?
It’s summer and hydrotherapy classes are going strong! Liz is now captaining the squad at Sawtell pool Tuesday mornings while Suzie, Harry and Zac are sharing the load at Coffs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Make sure you jump in with each of our staff members as we all run the classes differently (apparently Liz is the toughest!).
To maintain variety and keep things interesting we have been incorporating some pool weights, noodles, underwater steps and the good-old water resistance. With all this equipment we can turn a float into the pool into a targeted, challenging workout! We can also cater each exercise to target (or support) a specific injury or weakness.
While pool classes can give anyone a good workout (even our staff!) it is particularly useful certain conditions. Arthritic joints, post-op limbs, weight-loss warriors and neurological conditions can all benefit from exercise in the water. Water provides buoyancy to decrease impact, hydrostatic pressure to aid inflammation, heat to warm up joints and resistance to build strength.
So, come on down to Coffs Pool at 8:30 Tuesday and Thursday, or Sawtell Pool at 8:30 Tuesday and get involved!
