Exercise Right Week
This year’s Exercise Right Week started on Monday 21st May and had the theme ‘Motivation to Move‘
At Hoys Physiotherapy we have a big emphasis on exercise based rehabilitation, but our Exercise Physiology department has been going above and beyond, sharing real-life exercise journeys with Australians whose lives have been positively impacted by physical activity.
Zac has been doing a great job with the Beat it Program. The Beat it Program is a group based exercise classes run over 8 weeks for any diagnosed Type 2 diabetics that are registered with the NDSS (National Diabetes service scheme) for more information on this program go to https://diabetesnsw.com.au/beat-it/ or please contact the office. Zac has also been assisting with Hydrotherapy at the Coffs Pool on Tuesday Mornings, with great feedback form the participants about his enthusiasm and fun classes.
Mark runs the ManPlan program which is a group based exercise program for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and on the drug Lucrin. This class runs 2 x week from our Jetty office, for more information on the class, go to http://themanplan.com.au/ or contact the office for further information.
We want to inspire those who don’t exercise to move more, demonstrate to all Australians the importance of seeking the right exercise expert for their requirements, and in turn raise awareness of Accredited Exercise Physiologists. For information on Exercise Right Week 2018 please go to http://exerciseright.com.au/

PILATES Update –
Pilates and Pregnancy
Are you pregnant? Or have you had children in the past and haven’t regained your core strength again?
Pregnancy changes the body in many ways. Some changes take longer than others to return to normal. Childbirth in general affects the body’s core strength and rebuilding that strength post-pregnancy can be harder than you think. Returning to your pre-pregnancy fitness level and sporting activities requires a considerable amount of core and hip strength and Pilates is the best way to help achieve that.
Matwork or equipment Pilates is an excellent way to teach your body how to activate those important core and pelvic floor muscles to avoid long-term complications related to childbirth. Many women experience lower back or hip pain during pregnancy that can continue to cause issues long after childbirth. Having a detailed assessment by a Physiotherapist and having an individualised strengthening program is the best way to tackle these common problems.

What’s new in the pool?
With winter around the corner the indoor heated pool at Coffs Harbour War Memorial Pool is really being appreciated. Zac and Harry are still running classes 8:30-9:30 on Tuesday and Thursday. The pool sits between a warming 28 and toasty 32 degrees, enough to soothe aching joints and still allow some fun exercise.
We understand that many people may be apprehensive about getting in the water (particularly in winter!) but rest assured, the classes are supportive and the instructors know their stuff. We can cater the class to every ability level. We can even organise some 1:1 sessions in the pool (by appointment) if you feel like you would benefit from a bit more guidance.
Pool exercise can give anyone a good workout (even our staff!) and it is
particularly useful in certain conditions. Arthritic joints, post-op limbs, weight-loss warriors and neurological conditions can all benefit from exercise in the water. Water provides buoyancy to decrease impact, hydrostatic pressure to aid inflammation, heat to warm up joints and resistance to build strength.
So, come on down to Coffs Pool at 8:30 Tuesday and Thursday and get involved!
