PILATES Classes Now Available
Hoys are excited to announce the introduction of Matwork Pilates classes at our Sawtell and Jetty practices. Initially Pilates will be run by one of our Physiotherapists, Suzie Ammann, who has been trained by the Pilates Institute of Queensland. Pilates at Hoys is designed by a Physiotherapist, thus is both gentle and challenging with a strong focus on technique. Regardless of fitness level, age, previous experience or injuries, being in a small group environment will allow the class to be tailored to your needs making it appropriate for everyone.
Pilates is a way of exercising designed to target and strengthen certain muscle groups in the body to improve overall muscle strength, endurance, posture and flexibility. Pilates aims to improve the body’s ability to activate the right muscles at the right time particularly focusing on the stabilising muscles that support the spine, known as the ‘core.’ Pilates combines the principles of muscle control and precision of movement with coordinated breathing and posture control.
Pilates is suitable for a range of injuries and musculoskeletal problems including lower back and neck pain, pelvic floor weakness and incontinence, headaches, upper and lower limb muscle and joint injuries and generalised muscle weakness.
If you haven’t participated in Pilates with a Physiotherapist before or haven’t seen one of our Physiotherapists and been taught core activation and posture correction you need to attend an individual assessment session before starting the group classes. This involves a 30-minute consult with Suzie, where she will teach you how to activate your core, gluteal and pelvic floor muscles, find neutral lumbar spine and teach you the basic principles of Pilates. This will provide you with a better understanding of the exercises and ensure that they are safe for you.
If you have a health fund, depending on your level of cover, Pilates can be claimed. However, for this to happen, you must have an initial consult with our Physiotherapist first. If you’re not sure if you are covered for Pilates, its best to call your health fund and ask.
Mat classes involve performing exercises to strengthen muscles around your back, neck, stomach and legs using your body weight and gravity for resistance. It aims to improve posture and coordination in a variety of difference positions and is suitable for everyone from beginner to advanced. Our classes will have a maximum of eight participants and run for 60 minutes.
